Benefiting from English

Monday, June 11th was CJ's first day in first grade and the next day I was still on the phone, hungry for updates. My foremost concern was how did he find and take it. Any friends? The first day, I was told, they did mostly orientation stuff. What I liked hearing best of all was that CJ found a friend and behaved just fine.


"Oh, that's good," I said to the Grandma. "Who is that kid?" Like any mom I am interested to know who are my child's friends. CJ's new school friend, I found, is a transferee student from Cebu. "Looks like a smart kid," Grandma observed, "he and CJ hit it off quickly as they have one thing in common - they both speak English."

Apparently, CJ's English language training has benefited him. And I have yet to 'unboggle' my mind about all this talk of local dialects in Philippine schools being adapted as medium of instruction, translations to English, and back to conversational lingo. Sometimes it seems to me Moms have more schoolwork to do than kids.

    Yup! I'm quite surprised with the new curriculum today on pre-elem and elem students about using our local dialects. Now, that I trained my son more with Tagalog and English, he's a bit having a problem with his "mother-tongue" class. But because he's a bright boy I know he will get thru with it. :)

    This local dialect thing used as medium for instruction is still a mind-boggling topic for me. It's ok if Filipino as UPIS uses it but how about Cebuano and other local dialects? Visiting from Mommy Moments. =)

    I also enrolled my classmate in a school that uses English language training, in that way she could communicate well with her Dad. Visiting from Color Connection

    we use English instruction at home but mainly use Filipino for communication, does that work?

    Yes, Mommy Hazel, you're right! We have more schoolwork to do than our kids. Next week is only my son's second week in school, but we were already given a list of what they will do for the whole week. It seems I won't have time to rest on weekends. Lol!

Skywatch : west side of Taj Mahal Sally's Blues /  Reflections : by the blue lotus pond Fave Five: Living to  Tell the Story   /   Shine the Divine October has been very eventful. Stress and joys, adventures and challenges, you name it. It's wonderful to have the chance to express gratefulness for making it through this final week of a beautiful month. i. Surviving a task at work on finance/statistics: not my expertise but I did it. ii. Another world landmark off the bucket list. Taj Mahal is quite a love monument. iii. Angel friends : geographically distant (Canada) but willing to stick it out in their iphones the whole night to give emotional support. iv.  Kiddo in church with minimal adult supervision. The singing ministry does him good.   v. Mom's back at home after fighting off inflammation of the lungs and heart successfully. Now I can breathe.

Those charming moments

Skywatch : city is far behind and I'm loving it! Reflections : serenade I buy books just because.... My not-so-old hat from the antiques section of a weekend market  A little yummy error Maybe I had more of those charming moments this week than the other weeks. I'm thankful. Swiss sheep farm . Anything that takes me out of sight of urbanization, rising concrete (condos) and drab parking spaces - I'm in. What a treat for the country girl in me!
