Pineapples through a moving window

Dole Food Company, the largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world, is headquartered in Westlake Village, California. The company has operations in 90 countries, my home country, the Philippines included. A drive from General Santos City to Tupi, a town known as the fruit basket of Mindanao, (international word association: Osama bin Ladin's al Qaeda) would give you pineapples as your major sight during the travel.
Dole Philippines, with offices in Polomolok, is the 3rd largest producer of pineapples globally.

These are private fruit growers putting up shop along the highway. They are also selling some Dole pineapples. Right behind these shops is Dole's vast pineapple plantation. This was one of those yearly trips home when we made a stop (from the GSC airport) at these shops to buy supersweet MG3 pineapples, bananas, jackfruit, guyabano, lanzones, mangoes, avocados, and other tropical fruits.

  7. I learnt a factoid about pineapples from Alan Davies on QI the other night that I don't even want to repeat here, so you'll have to go and look it up for yourself.

We get plenty of Dole pineapples and bananas here.

  9. Delicious! I could just chop up a pineapple right now. I haven't heard of some of the exotic fruit you mention so I will have to Google for them. Lovely pics of the stalls overflowing with fruit :-) Jo

  10. Many years ago, Dole had huge plantations in Hawaii, on Oahu. They had pineapples as far as the eye could see. Up the road were sugar plantations owned by C&H. My dad had the pleasure of calling on these places to inspect their machinery for the pressing process. Sadly, Hawaii's main revenue today is tourism and the plantations are not so vast. C&H sugar doesn't play their little jingle "from Hawaii, growing in the sun" any more because they don't get all their sugar there. sigh...how times change.

  11. So much beautiful fruit available from the roadside. I love shopping at Farmer's markets and fruit stands. Everything seems to taste better.

  12. Pineapples really are the most bizarre fruit when you think about it. How can something that looks so strange taste so good.

  13. Wow, what an amazing photo! Pineapples are very good for us- but here in America people have statues and other things decorated in the shape of a pineapple for good luck!

THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!

Dyslexics and Developmental Pediatricians

Let me begin with an observation on the latter.  Developmental pediatricians in the Philippines are a rare breed. Or that's what I noticed. From society and organization websites, to forums, to word-of-mouth, to my own experience, they seem to be outnumbered by people who need their expertise. A parent of a child with developmental delays has to wait weeks or months to see one developmental pediatrician. Only thirty are listed on the Philippine Society of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Twenty-five in one Filipino autism blog, and that is not purely DevPeds. A child psychologist, child psychiatrist, and pediatric neurologist are mixed in the list, although they certainly are a big help too. At my son's speech therapy and psychology center I hear the same account from other parents - securing a time slot with a DevPed is hard. They are all fully booked throughout what could turn into a year. You may be lucky if someone withdraws but that rarely happens. I'm playing

Honor, Awards and a Game

Tuesday Couch Potatoes: Made of Honor Awards and a Game/Meme follow. Please scroll down a bit. My pick for this week's TCP theme (wedding movie) is Made of Honor. I like the humor in it. We've all been to several weddings but how many of us can say I've been to one in which the maid of honor was a he? The scene which particularly cracked me up is when the priest mistook the maid of honor for a gay man =) If you're familiar with some of my likes, you'd know why I also love the Scotland location of the wedding. For more of the synopsis click here ; and here's the trailer: Head over to Just About Anything for more wedding movies. ************ My super duper bloggy friend Thom of Thom's Place for Well Whatever and fellow Mom Tetcha of Pensive Thoughts awarded me this Beautiful Blogger award. I have to list seven things about me so here they are: 1. I love wearing jeans more than skirts. 2. One of my favorite colors is purple. 3. I don't mind spending su
