Unknown reasons

What spirit is so empty and blind that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed? - Michelangelo

Why is the Mom in this family picture smiling? Oh, I know. The Dad is wearing shoes.

But my mother was also smiling in our family photo. All three of us look about the same age as this family. Mama said she explicitly told Papa that day long ago that we would sit for a family portrait so we were to don something formal. But lo and behold Papa came in flip flops! Mama wasn't very happy about it. She still placed our picture neatly in the family album though. Family is family, slippers or stilettos.

What is unknown to me, besides the identity of this family, is how Father (rest in peace, Pap) ended up in the photo studio wearing slippers when he wore shoes virtually all the time. In fact we only saw him wearing slippers during his retirement.

Ah well, so much for shoes. I have loads of them but I don't want to ramble on about why I have more shoes than umbrellas when I live in a country that blazes hot all year.

I could probably attempt an analysis, but there are more interesting Unknowns to explore this week at Sepia headquarters.

  2. MMhhh ... Imelda Marcos III, I see.

By the way, Imelda Marcos II is my m-i-l - we once worked out that she had more shoes per $ income than Imelda Marcos. Well we didn't really work it out, but it was fun to say.

  3. These are great! I love the partially tinted family photo.

About the unknowns, we can only guess ... and that makes great fodder for story starters, doesn't it?

  5. This reminds me that I am not ranked very high in the shoes stake. I wonder what the name is for a group of shoes. Fine family photo.

  7. When my younger daughter and I travel together, we like to take a picture of our feet at the end of the trip. Then it's usually one of the last photos in the album.

  8. I enjoyed your post.

It reminded me of the time we were having a formal family portrait done years ago and my daughter insisted on wearing her Rapunzel Barbie costume and could not be persuaded otherwise. She now loves that photo as there is a story to go with it.

  9. So wher is the out of step pic of your Dad in his flip flops? - do share! I enjoyed this take on the theme though and I hope I haven't 'put my foot in it'.

  10. I can see that you believe in putting your best foot forward. I do have a number of pictures of feet in my archives but they normally result from pressing the camera shutter by mistake as I walk along!

  11. Your wedding family photo is stunning, and the little girl's dolly almost as big as she is! I really like the umbrella girls too!

Dreaming up a surprise

A lovely week my friends! I give you sunrise from the world's largest religious monument - Angkor Wat and a quiet spot from the chili patches Some days this week were bittersweet. But I'm loving the joys and faves: This goodbye is not forever . Someone dear to me is away for a couple of days. On call for an important politician, he does not know when is he returning to base. Communication to the outside is quite restricted. Then out of the blue he sent word saying he was making use of what internet access was allowed 'along palace perimeter...' and then he was gone. But I'm glad he tried to reach me. Monuments Men . Those art pieces! They took my breath away. The Valley is a friend's short story which he asked me to edit for an alumni newsletter. I was hesitant; warned him I might unwittingly ruin it. My mind went back to that article I wrote 19 years ago. It was too late when I realized how unnecessarily sentimental it sounded; it was already...

Boracay

Boracay is a resort island in the Philippines, administered by the Philippine Tourism Authority and the province where it belongs - Aklan. The island is approximately 196 miles south of Manila. I visited it on a whim in 2013, a year after it was awarded, among several other awards, the best island  in the world by Travel + Leisure, an international travel magazine. "Apart from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also famous for being one of the world's top destinations for relaxation. It is also emerging among the top destinations for tranquility and nightlife."
